The Office of Inspector General (OIG) has found that nursing homes are significantly underreporting falls with major injury among Medicare-enrolled residents. Nursing homes serving Medicare beneficiaries are required to report falls via the Minimum Data Set (MDS) assessments, which directly affect CMS Care Compare quality ratings.
