The Joint Commission (TJC) recently released a new FAQ about standard IC.07.01.01, which requires hospitals and critical access hospitals to implement “…processes to support preparedness for high-consequence infectious diseases or special pathogens” and is effective July 1, 2024.

According to the FAQ, while there is not a standard definition or list of specific high-consequence infectious diseases (HCIDs) or special pathogens, a consensus is that they meet the following criteria:
